United Kingdom
A clear system, hard deadlines, a shorter degree
Britain's strength is not its rankings but the length of its degrees. An undergraduate degree in England is three years, a master's one. Against four years in the US that is a whole year of tuition and living costs saved, and a year earlier into work. For Uzbek students the main question is different: whether you can enter directly after an 11-year school. The British system assumes 13 years of education.
Next deadline
October 15, 2026
UCAS: Oxford, Cambridge, medicine
Medicine, dentistry and veterinary science share this date. 18:00 UK time.
Who it suits
- Students who know their profession — in Britain specialisation starts on day one
- Families who want it finished faster and for less
- Fields where accreditation matters: engineering, law, accountancy, medicine
- Those who want a sandwich course — a programme with a placement year
Who it does not suit
- Students who have not chosen a direction — changing course later is hard
- Those whose English is still low (the university requirement is higher than the UKVI one)
- Under-18s who are not ready to live independently

The truth about funding
In Britain the difference between a scholarship and a bursary matters: a scholarship is a fee reduction for achievement, a bursary is help given because the family cannot pay. Both are awarded at university level, and their deadlines often close before the application deadline. Chevening and Commonwealth are for postgraduate study only. For undergraduates the main source is the university's own international scholarships.
The most common mistakes
- 01Preparing the reference late — the application will not go without a school reference, and this is the most common reason it stalls
- 02Trying to apply to Oxford and Cambridge at once — this is not possible
- 03Not accounting for the IHS — roughly £2,328 up front for a three-year programme
- 04Choosing the wrong Foundation — a business Foundation does not lead to engineering
- 05Confusing the university's English requirement with the UKVI one — the university's is higher
